Even if you aren’t a BMW fan, few will argue that the kidney grille is not a distinctive part of the brand. Check out this video showing the evolution of the kidney grille.

Recently a design patent issued to BMW and illustrates a kidney grille design that undoubtedly will not be added to this article highlighting the top 5 grille designs. In fact, the design in this new patent is even worse than this design.

Apparently it is the i Vision Dynamcs concept, and isn’t near as ugly as I expected based upon the drawings above, but it sure isn’t going to win any beauty contests.

What on earth is going on in the design studios at BMW? Sure, you need to introduce modern designs, which will naturally require modern interpretations of the kidney grille design, but this. Really! I am not even a huge BMW fan, but please I beg — hire a brand manager that will overzealously protect such brand gems.
