Supercharged Motorcycle – Yes Please; Elephant Trunk of an Intake – No Thanks
I remember being fixated on the intake of a V-max in the early 1990’s; it was just so cool and almost whispered “too much power for you, keep walking.” Since then many bikes have tried to pull off distinctive and cool intakes, but I can’t think of any that have successfully done it. This ugly and awkward implementation trend continues in a design disclosed in a recently issued Kawasaki patent.
The patent, USPN 10190454 titled “Motorcycle Supercharger,” got my attention simply from the title, but also resulted in me throwing up in my mouth a little bit when I saw this drawing.
Wow, nice snorkel! (not a phrase you want to hear when someone sees your bike)
Fortunately the patent has nothing to do with the intake, so I am hopeful that the drawing is an exaggerated schematic of an intake.
So, what does the patent cover? Read this independent claim and see if you can explain what is unique in a single sentence.
OK, if you successfully distilled what is innovative into a single sentence from the claim, you should be a patent attorney.
Here is how Kawasaki’s patent attorney pitched it to the patent examiner!
So it is all about serviceability. Nonetheless, I would love to see them launch a bike with that intake, just think of all the potential product names!
